Kenny Chesney is a legend. When he adds Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt, and Old Dominion to his line-up, his Spread The Love Tour goes from great to epic. It’s no wonder his tour played to a packed crowd of 47,992 country fans at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Old Dominion opened the show. Led by lead singer Matt Ramsey, Old Dominion started with their current single, “Snapback.” If only they tossed a few into the crowd. Old Dominion has shifted their set list from songs they wrote for other artists to songs they have released as a group. I would have loved to hear Tyler Farr’s “A Guy Walks Into a Bar,” Old Dominion still remains one of my favorite country groups.
Sam Hunt was up next. I have to say, he is an unbelievable songwriter. Hunt has written songs released by country music’s biggest stars – Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, and Billy Currington. The Nelly inspired R&B mixes in between songs mirrored what I envision a Macklemore concert to feel like. It was my first time seeing Hunt and I’m still confused which genre he belongs to. At one point during “Take Your Time,” Hunt sat down on stage to serenade a woman in the crowd. The only thing I took my time with was the beer in my hand. Hunt was a brave soul when he left the stage to venture into the crowd of screaming fans. I’m shocked he made it back to close out his set.
The last time I saw Miranda Lambert was in 2008 when she co-headlined with Blake Shelton at the Arizona State Fair. This time around, I witnessed a new Lambert. She had more confidence and a lot more sass. She wore silver cowboy boots with a black skirt and top. I was secretly hoping she was wearing a Wallet Buckle on her silver belt. Lambert owned the catwalk. Her strut made me scared for anyone taking a ride in her “Little Red Wagon.” She sang my favorites – “Kerosene,” “All Kinds of Kinds,” “Automatic,” and “Famous in a Small Town.” She even threw in “Slow Ride” by Foghat and “Mississippi Queen” by Mountain, which she killed. Miranda Lambert is a powerhouse female country artist who makes the Spread the Love Tour worth every penny.
Finally, it was Kenny Chesney’s turn. His intro video made everyone at Chase Field feel like they were on a tropical vacation with a drink in hand. Chesney came out to “Beer in Mexico,” which was fitting for Phoenix since Cinco de Mayo was two days prior. Chesney brought a few surprises to his show. He invited Hunt on stage to sing “Come Over,” Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey and Brad Tursi to sing “Save it For a Rainy Day,” and Lambert to sing “You and Tequila.” Chesney has more hits than most artists on tour. He sang my favorites – “Til It’s Gone,” “I Go Back,” “Living in Fast Forward,” “Young,” and “How Forever Feels.” To end the epic night, Chesney pulled a kid on stage and gave him an Arizona Diamondbacks helmet and a female on stage to present her with a guitar, signed by Chesney himself. Kenny Chesney’s Spread The Love Tour is a must see this summer.
